Greenock West

At Greenock West URC we are in the fortunate position to be located close to the river Clyde and the beauty of the Argyllshire hills.

Greenock has become a popular cruise destination despite our reputation as an extremely rainy town.

There is local tourist group who attend the quay side to welcome the visitors with a piper when a cruise ship arrives. They are provided with maps and information on local places of interest and are invited to go on the free open top bus tour of our local highlights.

Our Church building is close to the cruise terminal and we decided that it would be nice to open the Church doors on some cruise days to allow the tourists and crew to enjoy the wonderful woodwork and beautiful stained glass that we are privileged to have in Greenock West URC.

We offer a warm welcome with complimentary tea or coffee and home baking served in the sanctuary. Our shortbread West Highland terrier biscuits, or ‘Greenock Westies’ as they are known, have proved popular and the recipe has now crossed the Atlantic!

One visitor was so taken with the Victoria sponge he offered to marry the baker!

These open days are staffed by volunteers from the congregation who enjoy meeting people from all over the world and find this a very rewarding outreach. To date we have welcomed visitors and crew from USA, Canada, France, Spain, Russia, China, Australia, Germany, Philippines, Wales and England.

Have a look through our photo gallery below at some of the beautiful craftsmanship in the church.
